Investigating crimes is more fun than hiring fresco painters.

When her husband’s mentor goes missing, Livia Aemilia postpones her home improvement plans to join the hunt for clues. It turns out the missing man was murdered, but does her husband Avitus thank her for this information?

No, he scolds her for snooping behind his back. Humph!

Avitus doesn’t want his impulsive wife to become obsessed with another murder. The less Livia knows about his investigation, the safer everyone will be (or so he thinks). Unfortunately, his attempts to conceal the truth only cause more problems for his reputation—and his marriage.

Meanwhile, Livia discovers the deaths are tied to someone in Rome’s water commission who’s been committing a series of crimes. Avitus is impressed and (finally!) acknowledges her sleuthing abilities.

They form a tenuous alliance, until Avitus learns the mastermind behind the crimes could be a ruthless, long-time enemy. Fearful for Livia’s safety, Avitus orders her to cease without any explanation.

Which only infuriates her into reckless action.
