Description
What would you give up today for a better tomorrow? Many individuals give up the only world they know in pursuit of a better tomorrow.
Pursuing a Better Tomorrow spans over a century, chronicling an inspiring cross-generational journey from Spain to the US. This novel weaves together four interconnected stories, each focusing on one main character per era. Through their personal narratives, the book explores the challenges and opportunities of immigration, acculturation, coming of age, and self-discovery.
The characters portray the strength required to achieve a better tomorrow amid the twists, turns, and synchronistic events that shape their lives. The story transports readers to a time long forgotten, providing a historical overview of the Taíno, conquistadors, early settlers, the Spanish Empire, and the Dominican Republic, all through the eyes of the characters. It highlights the sacrifices made for a better tomorrow, exchanging familiar worlds for lonely existences in new lands, illustrating arduous journeys and risks taken to escape dangerous homelands, starting with Christopher Columbus in 1492 and continuing with over 750,000 Spaniards reshaping the Western Hemisphere.
De La Rosa’s grandfather, José Fernández, left his village in Spain at 16, enduring the difficulties of acculturation alone in the New World. After eight years in Cuba, he settled in the Dominican Republic, where he started a family. In 1963, De La Rosa’s family emigrated to New York City, facing the same challenges as many immigrants.
Growing up in a predominantly Spanish-speaking environment, De La Rosa faced linguistic and cultural hurdles, excelling academically despite these obstacles. Attending an all-girl vocational high school, she entered the workforce unprepared for corporate life, learning through trial and error. Her story is one of self-acceptance, embracing her blended heritage, and finding her place between two worlds. Despite the challenges, she empowered herself, creating a successful career and life.
De La Rosa candidly shares her coming-of-age story of self-discovery as she transitioned from New York City’s projects to corporate America, detailing her personal and professional journey. From humble beginnings—and despite myriad challenges—unfolded a life of untold blessings and opportunities.
Pursuing a Better Tomorrow is a vivid portrayal of the immigrant experience, capturing the essence of personal growth, cultural fusion, and the relentless pursuit of a better future.
