Roger Cormier has yet to decide what to do with his life but knows he doesn't want to spend it working the family farm in rural Nova Scotia. Determined to make his way, he hitchhikes to Sudbury, Ontario, to seek his fortune in the nickel mines.

There, he meets Marla Fenwick of the Fenwick Mining Company. He soon realizes a miner's life is not for him and turns his attention to land development. In doing so, he uncovers a hostile attempt to take over the lucrative Fenwick operation.

When disaster strikes, Roger strives to convince Marla she can retain control of the mine and live a gratifying life filled with prosperity and true love.
